Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5

May 16, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

$5 – $50

The Williamsport Symphony Orchestra’s 2022-23 season ends in a blaze of excitement. José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango recreates a Mexican fiesta with its throbbing Latin rhythms and lively themes. A fast complex folk dance, the huapango is usually performed on a wooden platform to emphasize the tapping of heels and toes. Although it is based on folk melodies, Moncayo’s Huapango is much more than a simple arrangement. Rather, it is a brilliant display piece for orchestra that fully captures Mexico’s spirit. Prokofiev composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 at a time when he was bent on rivaling Rachmaninov’s popularity as the solo pianist in his own concertos. He did not succeed–nobody ever beat Rachmaninov at that game–but Prokofiev’s dazzling third piano concerto has made the reputation of some of the finest pianists performing today. Pianist, Melody Quah, described as “a poet with titanium fingers,” is our soloist. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 is the perfect conclusion to the season. It offers some of his most beautiful melodies and a finale described by one writer as displaying “the untamed fury of the Cossack.”
